Monção and Melgaço Day is celebrated on June 7th and, as always, we make a point of celebrating it with the future protagonists of our region. In the year we turn 40, we returned to the elementary schools of Monção and Melgaço to present the game “The Adventure of the Alvarinho Grape”.
Monção and Melgaço Sub-region Day
The Monção and Melgaço Sub-region Day is celebrated on June 7th and celebrates the recognition of the sub-region’s seal of origin, the “Origin of Alvarinho”.
The attribution of the brand and seal of origin is a recognition of the exclusivity, authenticity, origin and quality of the wines produced in Monção and Melgaço, certifying the sub-region as the original territory of the Alvarinho variety, presenting unique characteristics for the production of this variety.

Back to schools to celebrate the Sub-region Day
From the 3rd to the 7th of June, we returned to the elementary schools of Monção and Melgaço to celebrate the Sub-region Day, challenging students, in a fun way, to play the game “The Adventure of the Alvarinho Grape”, raising the younger ones’ awareness of the importance of Alvarinho’s family viticulture in the region.

It is important that, from an early age, the new generations are encouraged to be drivers of their history and capable of providing it, whether today or tomorrow, with new visionary ideas that allow us to continue to grow, to rejuvenate and to take our identity further.
Due to its history and importance for the socio-economic and environmental dynamism of Monção and Melgaço, Soalheiro plays an active role in valuing the winemaking tradition of this Territory. As Maria João Cerdeira states:
The knowledge of the vineyard in our territory passes from generation to generation, given the family culture. As our parents passed on to us, our goal is to help pass this passion on to the younger ones.
It is always a pleasure to share our passion for the variety, the territory and viticulture. The visit to the schools was an opportunity for us to see, once more, inspiring illustrations drawn in our children’s book.
Alongside the Grape Game, we also joined the different classes and teachers of Melgaço school to paint a mural in homage to the Alvarinho variety, immortalizing its value among the generations, who will serve as ambassadors of tomorrow in the region.
“The future of the Alvarinho grape is in your hands”
This is the motto of the Grape Game, which serves as an invitation to go on an adventure alongside the Alvarinho grape, helping it to follow its path from the vineyard to the bottle, fighting some of the enemies of the vineyards, such as mildew or frost.

We launched the game “The Adventure of the Alvarinho Grape” a year ago, to celebrate Sub-region of Monção and Melgaço Day, together with the edition and distribution of more than 3000 children’s books “Alvarinho – The story of a grape that wanted to be territory”, in the homes of Monção and Melgaço’s students.
