A journey through the Alvarinho territory
The Valley, the Mountain and the Old Vines
Soalheiro’s wines are made by many hands, from small plots of vines scattered throughout the territory, treated like gardens by the 180 families that are part of the Viticulturists’ Club – from above, these plots look like a patchwork quilt.
Alvarinho was born in the valley, but the focus on high-altitude Alvarinho has led more winegrowers to start planting vines higher and higher up the slopes of the mountains that demarcate Monção and Melgaço. From our First Vineyard we also set out to study, preserve and enhance old vines. The fact that we have different harvests means that we have the diversity to fine-tune the profile of the Clássico, but it also leads us to discover and improve new profiles, as was the case with Granit and Primeiras Vinhas.
The Clássicos Digital Wine Tasting Experience reflects this diversity, taking you on a journey into Alvarinho territory, with our winemaker Luís Cerdeira, through three Soalheiro Clássicos, distinguished by their unique profile – na Alvarinho from the Valley, na Alvarinho from the Mountain and na Alvarinho from the Old Vines.
The tasting begins with Soalheiro Clássico, our most emblematic wine and a classic expression of Alvarinho – an Alvarinho from the Monção and Melgaço valley, with a fresh and aromatic profile.
This is followed by Soalheiro Granit, an Alvarinho that comes from vines planted at altitude, on the slopes of the mountains, thus revealing a unique mineral profile.
The tasting ends with Soalheiro Primeiras Vinhas, an iconic Alvarinho, which is now part of a selection of vines over 30 years old from our Viticulturists’ Club and is thus a driving force behind the preservation of old vines in the territory.
