At the Cave da Inovação, in partnership with the young winemakers from APRT3 Vinhos, Soalheiro has applied two classic Italian methods to Alvarinho: Amarone and Ripasso. The result is two wines from Monção and Melgaço with a rare connection: the lees from the first give rise to the second.
Alvorone 2020: Alvarinho, Amarone-style
The Alvarinho grapes are dried for 3 to 4 weeks to concentrate sugars and acidity. The must ferments and matures for a year in new oak barrels and spends at least 6 months in stainless steel tanks before bottling. Intense colour, with aromas of wood, honey and ripe fruit. Full-bodied, very persistent, with 14.5% alcohol.
Melpasso 2021: a Ripasso made in Melgaço
A one-off wine, produced in a single vintage. An Alvarinho base wine is passed over the lees of Alvorone, undergoing a second maceration and a slow refermentation. It is aged in stainless steel and used oak barrels and then rests in the bottle. Intense golden colour; aromas of pear, quince, dried apricot, subtle honey, orange blossom and dried fruit. Full-bodied and textured on the palate, with a long, mineral finish.
